Cavaliers

Nikki Sudden

Cavaliers look out of windows
As the guards go riding by
Holding their hands over their eyes
So they can't see the sky.

As poets sell their diaries
And beg for the chance to speak
They'd give up all their innocence
For just one hour of sleep.

And in the hall of mirrors
A juggler reads the news
And he throws his words into the air
As he runs off with my shoes.

And he's looking for something
That he thinks he'll never find
There's nothing left for him to do
But to cry away his time.

So he runs back to the courtroom
Where the lawyers wash their hands
And he knows that they're not guilty
But no-one seems to understand.

And as look-outs pace down corridors
And mercenaries burn the fields
The courtiers stand round laughing
Pretending it just isn't real.

And they're looking for something
That they're sure that they'll never find
And there's nothing left for them
But to cry away their time.

And the serjeant he just stands there
With his feet on the garden wall
As the city fathers light candles
And wait for the sky to fall.

And in the empty courtroom
The dancers change their clothes
And they watch the castles fall down
As they send each other notes.

And they know there's nothing left
And there's nothing for them to do
So they order up their carriages
And search for something new.

And as the river breaks it's banks
And washes them all away
I look into the mirror
And I try to remember my name.

'Cause I'm looking for something
That I'm sure I'll never find
There's nothing left for me to do
But to cry away my time.

Oh, I'm looking for something
That I know I'll never find
And there's nothing left for me
But to cry away my time.
