It Turned Out To Be a Song

Malvina Reynolds

Some people bake a cookie,
Some people fly an aeroplane,
Some people turn a shovel over
And up comes a field of grain.
I was just walking along
Thinking of this and that,
And a hat and a cat and a baseball bat,
A bee in a tree and a city in the sea.
And a ping, pong,
Swing the gong,
And it turned out to be a song.

Some people read a story,
Some people eat an apple pie,
Some people sit at the open window,
Watching the stars go by.
I was just walking along
Thinking of here and there,
And a kitchen chair, and some natural hair,
A garden swing, and a circus ring,
And a ping, pong,
Swing the gong,
And it turned out to be a song.

Some people ride a bicycle,
Some people take a walk in the rain,
Some people hear a funny noise,
And it sounds like a railroad train.
I was just walking along
Nothing much in my mind,
But a window blind, and an orange rind,
A hoop and a top, and a skippety hop,
And a ping, pong,
Swing the gong,
And it turned out to be a song.
