Don't Think I Don't Think About It

Bob Luman

I left my last pack
Of cigarettes in the back
Of that long black Cadillac
The day that habit took Daddy down
Spent the next year or so
Emptying bottles on a lonely road
Until the night
That train came just close enough
To straighten me out

But don't think I don't get a whiff of smoke
And need a drag so bad I could choke
I still taste the Crown in my Coke
I know I'm better off without it
But don't think I don't think about it

I took a wood match
To a faded photograph
And I watched us split in half
As if that hadn't already happened
I don't drive by her house
Hoping she'll walk out
I steer clear of that part of town
Hell it ain't worth the traffic

Don't think I don't see two people in love
And wish I could swing by and pick her up
I know that road no longer leads to us
There's no need to go back down it
But don't think I don't think about it

I've got a ghost who likes to drink and smoke
And bring her home at night
He still rattles his chains but I ain't afraid
Since I got my head on right
Gonna go the long way around
I won't take the easy way out
But don't think I don't think about it
